LA Phil Creative Director Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a program contemplating nature's ritual communications and avian wonder. The performance features Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, inspired by soaring swans, alongside the US premiere of Gabriella Smith’s How to Be A Bird. Smith's work translates her passion for environmental restoration and wildlife into joyful musical expression. The program begins with the delicate sounds of solo flutes mimicking Arctic birds. Einojuhani Rautavaara’s 1972 neo-Romantic concerto further transports listeners to Finnish landscapes, incorporating recorded tracks of cooing and singing birds into the orchestral performance.
