Be gay be trans do crime
Forever grateful for filmmakers who just fucking make the thing.
The mixture of gentle companionship with the rough edges of a harsh world creates a sense of doom, a sense that nothing good will ever happen, a sense that forces so much bigger than these beautiful gender-bent survivors demand their failure, their agony, their turmoil in exchange for any moment of sweetness they steal out of the hell that is life below the poverty line and outside the confines of normal society. These ill-graced but earnest souls have a childlike energy to them as they plan stupid heists and engage in petty crimes that only a cruel world would give a damn about; it makes the sense of doom that much more painful and the moments of happiness even more painful than that. There's joy and hope in this somehow. It made me cry harder than the wails of fear and anguish in the bleakest moments of the film. I want the world for these queer trans spirits; I want better than what the all-too-real world could possibly provide for them. The film's raw look firmly plants them in that reality. Their naivete and kindness to one another is a contrast I have no words to convey. Neither a gun nor a mother will solve their problems, but their attempts at finding something to hope for is stronger than all their reasons to lose hope entirely. Comparing this to Bonnie and Clyde doesn't work; this is a story unlike any other ever told. Maybe compare it to other hard luck stories or the saddest punk rock songs you've ever heard; maybe compare it to film noir blended with Stranger Than Paradise blended with a children's book. Slice-of-life for the people whose stories don't get told. An expression of instability and the belief that there's something better on the other side of that instability and the hard truth that maybe there isn't all twisted through a lens of DIY courage. (Rarely does a film's soundtrack so perfectly capture its essence; when "Androgynous" played over the credits, my tears renewed their torrents. Fuzz and buzz and sharp guitars and longing voices and barely suppressed rage and sincerity make the best music.)Pride Month count: 2/30
The film follows two trans men, Shy and Valentine, who meet and bond over a life of petty crime while navigating personal struggles and their search for connection.
The film was co-directed by Silas Howard and Harry Dodge, who also star in the lead roles of the 2001 production.
