What’s the gutter glam of noir look like when refracted through a modern queer sensibility? A beefcake antihero so haunted by his demons that he puts his own cock in chastity and freezes the keys in a block of ice. A murder (that I wouldn’t dream of spoiling) that’s hilarious in its excess but still emotionally intense as a function of character.As with its lurid and trashy qualities, the genre’s cynicism also gets an update, depicting cops as either seriously compromised or irredeemably corrupt. Filmmaker Dean Francis shows no interest in making something retro or camp; this picture feels of-the-moment, even as it’s over-the-top, frequently hot, and enormously fun.
