Take note. I’ve seen the best documentary at Sundance 2026, and it’s AMERICAN DOCTOR. A brutal, harrowing, and absolutely vital look at three American physicians who voluntarily enter Gaza to save lives as hospitals are deliberately targeted and resources are scarce. Director Poh Si Teng captures the impossible triage decisions, the fear, the exhaustion, and the moral urgency that drives them forward both at home and abroad. Following three doctors of Palestinian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian backgrounds, the film becomes a powerful testament to unity, courage, and conscience in the face of this barbaric genocide. Tense, angering, humane, and impossible to shake, this is unforgettable filmmaking with the power to save lives for those open to seeing it.

Thoroughly appreciated how this manages to document the average person’s subconscious desire to shield themselves and others from this level of horrific violence by showing the filmmaker’s own knee-jerk reaction to blur or cut images of murdered children in Gaza. The doctor she’s speaking with immediately protests, loudly and with justifiable conviction, that that is one of the problems the Palestinian people are having to combat on top of a genocide—our desire to look away. This early exchange sets the tone of American Doctor. Going forward these images are shown with no hesitancy and no minimization, the cries and horrific silence of bombed children overwhelming the senses, as it should. The doctors featured prominently convey a remarkable degree of urgency and dedication to providing medical aid to those in most dire need, even as their own tax dollars supply the weapons that result in more death and life-altering injuries. An exhausting, horrific cycle, but one that’s documentation is necessary and hopefully provides a wake up call to those still so stubbornly turning away from what is happening in Palestine.
