Underground, νοσταλγικός καλλιτέχνης ambient folk
Guitarist, designer, collector and writer Bobby Lee (born Sheffield, UK) is a leading proponent of the ambient americana movement. His work also takes in cosmic country, heavy psych, balearic chuggers, acid-folk, analogue electronics and tape music. Whether solo, with his trio (Lee, electric and acoustic guitars, banjo and occasional synth, Mark Armstrong, bass/keys and Guy Whittaker, drums/percussion) or in collaboration with pedal-steel explorer Joe Harvey-Whyte, Bobby has developed a heady style, incorporating drum-machine fuelled swamp rock choogle, Neu-meets-Crazy Horse motorik groovers, eyes to sky longform rambles, back-porch found-sound vignettes and frayed denim folk-funk head nodders. Since his debut “Shakedown in Slabtown” in 2020, he has built up a varied catalogue of releases, from the 4-track minimalism of his breakthrough “Origin Myths” (2021), to the widescreen vistas of “Endless Skyways” in 2023 and his collab with Joe Harvey-Whyte “Last Ride” (2025), with releases on the legendary American Primitive label Tompkins Square, California cosmic country stalwarts Curation Records as well as singles through the balearic/disco leaning Leng, Wonderfulsound and Re:Warm.
He plays cosmic country-folk, blending ambient Americana with elements of heavy psych and analogue electronics, often released on labels like Tompkins Square.
