Auf den ersten Blick könnte Donnie Darko ein normaler, unkomplizierter Teenager sein. Geordnete Familienverhältnisse, verständnisvolle Eltern, eine nette Freundin. Aber Donnie hat ein mentales Problem – ein drei Meter großes, ziemlich dämonisches Kaninchen namens Frank. Nachts, wenn alles schläft, spricht seine sonore Stimme zu ihm und erteilt ihm Ratschläge. Die sind manchmal hilfreich und manchmal nicht, bezüglich jedweder Zukunftsprognose aber grundsätzlich zutreffend. Die von Donnies Eltern beauftragte Diplompsychologin ist genauso ratlos wie der schuleigene Motivationstrainer oder die freundliche Klassenlehrerin. Als Frank Donnie erklärt, dass in ziemlich genau 28 Tagen, 6 Stunden, 42 Minuten und 12 Sekunden die Welt untergeht, ist guter Rat mal wirklich teuer.
