Widely hailed as the Gqom King, DJ Lag is a pioneering South African producer and DJ whose bold, boundary-pushing sound has taken Gqom from the streets of Durban to the global stage. Known for his raw, percussive energy and forward-thinking production, Lag has become one of the most influential voices in electronic music. Since breaking out with early Gqom anthems in Durban’s taxi scene, he’s performed everywhere from Glastonbury to DC-10 Ibiza, collaborated with Beyoncé on “My Power”, and released the critically acclaimed albums Meeting with the King and The Rebellion—the latter earning a SAMA nomination in 2025. His latest release, the Southside Mixtape (2025), is an ode to the rhythms that shaped him—blending Gqom with 3-step, techno, and electronic influences. Featuring DJ Maphorisa, Zee Nxumalo, Ape Drums, Sykes, and more, the project reaffirms DJ Lag’s role as a global innovator, pushing South African dance music into bold, new territory.
