Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders
A nostalgic, homegrown jam band artist.
For five years in the early '70s, Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders headed up a loose-knit club band in the San Francisco area (the group never had an official name). They specialized in a graceful mix of jazz, R&B, blues, gospel, and light funk with hints of bop, fusion, and even reggae. Aside from the two-volume Live at Keystone (1973), most of the group's recorded output of the '70s appeared on various Saunders releases, but a steady stream of archival compilations has flowed for decades after their last appearance together. Garcia is in full flight as a guitarist on their duo recordings, with Saunders' soul-jazz organ giving things a wonderfully fluid feel. The best introduction to the two is Well-Matched: The Best of Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia, which gathers material from both live and studio releases. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
