Kim Janssen
Kim Janssen was born in the Netherlands but grew up in several major cities across Asia and recorded his first album when he was eighteen in an abandoned train station in a small US town, with Marla Hansen (Sufjan Stevens) playing viola and lending her vocals. He is known for his hushed deep baritone and soaring falsetto, idiosyncratic lyrics and varied arrangements. His discography ranges from whispered piano ballads to maximalist orchestral synth-pop and vocal harmony-driven folk and features collaborations with Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson (Sigur Rós), Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands), Paul Jacob Cartwright (Father John Misty) and the 100-piece ‘Toonkunst’ Choir, to name a few. In 2023 Kim took on the moniker Cape Sleep and on February 23rd, 2024 released his first album as Cape Sleep: 'Video Days'. The album breezes through a revolving door of vignettes with characters waxing existential and generally wallowing in melodrama as they spend summers alone in extravagant hotels, float across the Goldilocks Zone, rub shoulders with stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, and sneak into natural history museum dioramas. It contains slivers of 80’s synth pop, 70’s soft rock while having an overall sensibility that is reminiscent of 50’s adult-contemporary pop: a wide-eyed look at love, friendship and the world in general.
