The Roux
An underground country blues artist.
Most of my songs start in simple places: on the porch with a guitar, down at the park, or singing to my dogs while they lay in the grass and my chickens wander around the yard. That’s where I do my best thinking, and where the words usually find me. I grew up in the Midwest, where you could drive 100 miles in any direction and still feel like you've gone nowhere. This place taught me early what struggle feels like; a damaged childhood; losses that wake me up every night just to remind me how much they still hurt; and watching people I love fight and lose battles they didn’t deserve. Those things stuck with me. When I write, I’m not trying to dress them up. I just want to let them out plain, hopefully in a way that others can feel and understand them too. The Roux isn’t some mask or a bigger than life idea. It’s just me, turning what I’ve lived through into music and hoping it lands with someone who needs to hear it. The shadowed figure you see in my songs and images isn’t just me, it’s anyone who’s ever shouldered too much weight and kept moving anyway. If the songs feel like they were written for you, they were. I just bled them first. ~ The Roux
