Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra was created in May 1997 by musicians and associates that worked alongside the composer and knew his work extremely well. Their first appearance as an orchestra was in Exoni Theater in Glyfada in June 1997. Since then, the orchestra played many concerts and worked with famous and also younger artists. The orchestra has also played in theatres, musical theatres, sports fields and open spaces all over Greece, from Athens to the smallest villages of the country, and also in many countries abroad. Furthermore, they have organized and attended numerous concerts with other symphonic orchestras and choirs, frequently under the supervision of Mikis Theodorakis. The orchestra attends events to defend the right for peace, against racism and drugs, for imprisoned citizens, for the organization “Doctors without Borders”, because one of their important goal is to raise awareness on important social issues of our time. An important goal of the Orchestra is to promote and showcase the greatness of Mikis Theodorakis legacy in various ways, such us concerts, plays, television appearances and album recordings. Furthermore, their goal is to promote the legacy of important poets such as Giannis Ritsos, Odysseas Elytis, Manolis Anagnostakis and more. Finally, effort is being made towards showing the connection between folk and lyrical pieces with the symphonic music of the composer.
